‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’
No recent American independent film has generated more festival excitement than this exuberant faux folktale, set amid the picturesque dereliction of southern Louisiana and made mainly with non-actors, including a ragamuffin six-year-old of unsurpassed spunk. There’s a Zora Neale Hurston flavor to director Benh Zeitlin’s magic realist gumbo, but mainly this movie feels like something new.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles on June 27, followed by New Orleans on July 4, Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas/Fort Worth on July 6, and many other cities on July 13. For a complete list of theaters, click here.
