‘Bonsái’

Alejandro Zambra’s slender novella provides the scaffolding for Chilean director Cristián Jiménez’s meta-literary movie and is, in some ways, improved by the adaptation. With its shabby locations, deadpan exchanges, and a lively indie-rock score, Bonsái is a small, grounded, cumulatively poignant tragicomedy of student-boho life.
