Cahiers du Cinéma’: Two Film Series

As the world’s most influential film journal publishes its seven-hundredth issue, two successive series mark the event. The first is a “secret trove” of French classics that opens with a pair of early talkies by the underappreciated Jean Grémillon and, among other things, includes a digital restoration of the 1934 version of Les Misérables and Agnès Varda’s first color feature, the once scandalous Le Bonheur (1964). The second series, beginning in June, focuses on recent films championed by the still polemical journal.
