Capturing the Marvelous: Ukrainian Poetic Cinema

The strong strain of folk surrealism that Alexander Dovzhenko introduced to Ukrainian cinema is sampled and celebrated with two of his silent classics—Zvenigora (1927) and Earth (1930)—as well as Sergei Parajanov’s robust, near delirious Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964), and a pair of subsequent movies by Parajanov’s gifted cinematographer, Yuri Ilyenko.
