First Look 2013
The second edition of the Museum of the Moving Image’s “First Look” opens with the local premiere of Bressonian brutalist Bruno Dumont’s Outside Satan, in which two non-actors with a matching absence of affect tramp silently around the beautifully photographed dunes and marshes of northwest Normandy, engaging in strange rituals and precipitating peculiar outbreaks. Dumont also had a hand in Joanna Preiss’s claustrophobic Siberia. Other films include Inori, the latest by Mexican “situation documentary” maker Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio (albeit made in Japan), landscape artist James Benning’s abstract Easy Rider remake, and Reconversão (Reconversion), a portrait of the Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura by the highly original American cine-essayist Thom Andersen.
Screenings are free with admission to the museum. A full schedule is available here.
