Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui

Selected by Francine Prose

February 8, 2013 – August 4, 2013

The bottle cap has never looked more transcendently beautiful than it does in the art of El Anatsui. Born in Ghana, living in Nigeria, Anatsui uses recycled materials—milk cans, wire, shards of aluminum—to make massive, glittering wall hangings and floor sculptures that evoke African textile, the Arte Povera movement, patchwork, baskets, ant hills, and the paintings of Gustav Klimt. Throughout the show, documentary videos provide clues to the mystery of how work this original—and this magical—was created.

The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday. Suggested admission is $12.
