Helen Simpson Reads at the Hay Festival
June 4, 2012, 10 am
Collections of short stories have been a tough sell in recent decades, so to make a career out of them you have to be very, very good—which Helen Simpson is. She is often touted as Britian’s answer to Alice Munro, than which there can be no higher praise. This selection of 5 stories from each of her 5 collections shows that there is more than just life in the old genre yet: it shows that at their best short stories can delight and move and dazzle, and reach places no other kind of writing can reach. On June 4th, she will read from this collection and talk with Nathan Englander at the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts in Wales.
