An Iliad

An Iliad, co-written by the actor Denis O’Hare and the theater director Lisa Peterson, bravely attempts to encompass Homer’s 15,693-line epic in a 90 minute monologue. Reviewing the play’s New York run in the NYRBlog, Christopher Carroll wrote that, “An Iliad manages to give at least some sense of what has made Homer’s story so broadly appealing for the past 2800 years.” Yet it remains to be seen whether the Studio Theatre’s director, David Muse, and his star, Scott Parkinson, have addressed the play’s bizarre mixture of “chatty and insipid language” and “awkwardly interposed quotations from Robert Fagles’ austere translation.”
