‘The Law in These Parts’
Awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Festival, Ra’anan Alexandrowicz’s engrossing documentary examines the military justice system created by Israel in the occupied territories after 1967. Inside a bare studio, Alexandrowicz interviews retired Israeli judges who presided over the trials of Palestinians and who field his questions while being shown archival footage of the occupation. The result is a provocative exercise in role-reversal: as the camera rolls and the tone of Alexandrowicz’s questions sharpens, what unfolds is a mock trial of the judges themselves, who are pressed to explain how a four-decade-old military occupation can be reconciled with Israel’s professed commitment to the rule of law.
