Also showing on Wednesday, August 21 at 7:00 pm
Part of the Cine-Simenon series at the Anthology Films Archives.
John Banville called the book, published in the NYRB Classics series, “insouciantly gruesome.” The film adaptation, with Claude Rains and Anouk Aimée, shows the transformation when solid, responsible Popinga gets disillusioned by his swindling boss and hops a train to Paris. There, he encounters the underbelly of the City of Light—with its hardened criminals and edgy characters.
