The Mirliton Festival

Selected by Nathaniel Rich

November 3, 2012, 11 am7 pm

There are more than four hundred festivals held each year in Louisiana. That comes out to eight a weekend, or more than one for every incorporated city, town, or village in the state. Highlights of the fall include the Zwolle Tamale Festival, the Lecompte Pie Festival, and the Rayne Frog Festival. But the season’s crowning glory is the 23rd Annual Mirliton Festival, held in New Orleans’s Bywater neighborhood, in honor of the green, squash-like vegetable that is known elsewhere as chayote, christophene, vegetable pear, and cho-cho. Featuring performances by Kermit Ruffins, Charmaine Neville, the NOLA Cherry Bombs, and Daria and the Hipdrops.
