Francoise Truffaut credited Morris Engel's 1952 Little Fugitive, a low-budget movie set mainly in Coney Island, with inspiring the French nouvelle vague. Be that as it may, New York supported a scrappy, streetwise off-Hollywood well before the coinage “American independent.” “New Yawk New Wave” surveys the movement from Kubrick’s Killer’s Kiss through Scorsese’s Mean Streets, sampling films by John Cassavetes, Robert Frank, Shirley Clarke, Brian DePalma, Paul Morrissey, and the Kuchar Brothers (among others) on the way.
