The Rose King’

Selected by J. Hoberman

April 6, 2013, 8:20 pm

The late Werner Schroeter’s strongest period ended when he began making larger, more commercial movies in the late 1970s. But the most original and underground of Neue Kino filmmakers was capable of sudden revivals, notably this a brilliant assemblage of gothic rot and Catholic kitsch that Schroeter made in 1984 with his longtime superstar Magdalena Montezuma, then dying of cancer.

Showing as part of the retrospective "Werner Schroeter: Magnificent Obsession." Tickets are available online.
