Newly restored, Sandra is the least well-known film of Luchino Visconti’s best period—a valiant, wildly operatic, and fascinating attempt to fashion a modern Greek tragedy concerns the (possibly) incestuous children of a Jewish father (seemingly) betrayed by their mother during World War II. Claudia Cardinale is grim, gorgeous, and miscast in the title role.
