Something in the Air’

Olivier Assayas follows up on his epic Carlos with another period piece, this one evoking the student milieu of the early Seventies; it’s also replete with numerous parallels to Cold Water, the youth film with which Assayas made his reputation in the mid Nineties. The movie is at least partially autobiographical but the atmosphere is far more convincing than the would-be painter and part-time anarchist who is the filmmaker’s stand-in.

Opens Friday, May 3 in New York and LA, with other cities to follow.
