Peter Singer is Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, and Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of *Animal Liberation*, the editor of *In Defense of Animals: The Second Wav*, and, with Paola Cavalieri, co-editor of *The Great Ape Project*.

Keith Thomas is a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. His latest book is The Ends of Life: Roads to Fulfillment in Early Modern England. (December 2009)

Roger Shattuck is the author of Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography. He has most recently edited new editions of two books by Helen Keller. He is University Professor Emeritus at Boston University. (May 2005)

Bernard Williams is Deutsch Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. His most recent book is Making Sense of Humanity. The article in this issue is a revised version of the Orr Lecture given in the Music Faculty of Cambridge University, May 2000. An earlier draft was given at the Nexus Institute, Tilburg, Holland. Garry Wills is Professor of History Emeritus at Northwestern. The article in the Review‘s November 24, 2011 issue is drawn from his new book, Verdi’s Shakespeare: Men of the Theater (Viking).
