Robert M. Adams (1915-1996) was a founding editor of the Norton Anthology of English Literature. He taught at the University of Wisconsin, Rutgers, Cornell and U.C.L.A. His scholarly interested ranged from Milton to Joyce, and his translations of many classic works of French literature continue to be read to this day.

Thomas R. Edwards (1928–2005) was Professor of English at Rutgers and editor of Raritan. His last book was Over Here: Criticizing America.

William H. Gass is an American writer, critic and philosopher. He is the David May Distinguished University Professor in the Humanities at the Washington University in St. Louis.

John Golding (1929–2012) was a British painter and art historian. He taught at the Courtauld Institute and the Royal College of Art. Among his many books was Cubism: A History and an Analysis, which refuted the notion that Cubism represented a break with the realist tradition. Golding also curated exhibitions on both sides of the Atlantic, including Picasso: Painter/Sculpter and Matisse Picasso.

Jeri Laber, Senior Advisor to Human Rights Watch, was formerly executive director of its Helsinki division. She is the author, with Barnett R. Rubin, of ‘A Nation is Dying’: Afghanistan Under the Soviets, 1979—1987. (January 1997)

Conor Cruise O’Brien (1917–2009) was an Irish historian and politician. He was elected to the Irish parliament in 1969 and served as a Minister from 1973 until 1977. His works include States of Ireland, The Great Melody and Memoir: My Life and Themes.

Arthur Hertzberg (1921–2006) was a Conservative rabbi, scholar and activist. His books include The French Enlightenment and the Jews: The Origins of Modern Anti-Semitism and The Zionist Idea.

James Joll (1936–2011) was a British historian. His books include The Origins of the First World War and Europe Since 1870.

Raymond Carr was Warden of St. Antony’s College, Oxford, and has written extensively on modern Spanish history.

Arlen Specter is the Senior Republican United States Senator from Pennsylvania and Ranking Member on the Senate Judiciary Committee. (May 2009)
