Hans A. Bethe is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Cornell University. During the construction of the first atomic bomb he was head of the Theoretical Physics Division at Los Alamos and he has worked on arms control for the last forty years. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1967. (November 2000)

Thomas Sheehan is Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University. (December 2001)

John Updike was born in 1932 in Shillington, Pennsylvania. In 1954 he began to publish in The New Yorker, where he continued to contribute short stories, poems, and criticism until his death in 2009. His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, among other awards. His last books were the novel The Widows of Eastwick and Due Considerations, a collection of his essays and criticism.

Garry Wills is Professor of History Emeritus at Northwestern. The article in the Review‘s November 24, 2011 issue is drawn from his new book, Verdi’s Shakespeare: Men of the Theater (Viking).

Theodore Draper’s books include The Roots of American Communism and A Struggle for Power: The American Revolution. He is at work on a book about the nineteenth century in the US. (September 1999)
