Jean Alavoine: Final Plan of the Elephant Fountain for the Place de la Bastille, 1809–1810. Napoleon ordered the construction of this bronze fountain, representing ‘an elephant carrying a tower in the style of the ancients.’ Denon, whose signature on this watercolor suggests that it was the definitive plan, was put in charge of the project. Only a full-scale plaster model was built, which was demolished in 1846.
