In response to:

Randall Jarrell's Complaint from the November 23, 1967 issue

To the Editors:

In Stephen Spender’s review of Randall Jarrell, 1914-1965, in your issue of November 23, two of the quotations given are attributed to me. Gratifying as it is to see one’s name in print, I feel, nevertheless, that I should point out that both these quotations are taken from the prose piece contributed to the book by Mr. John Berryman. They are both on page sixteen.

Elizabeth Bishop

New York City

Stephen Spender replies:

Please accept my apologies, Miss Bishop. I wrote the review from the pasted-up page proofs sent me, and the attributions of two short prose pieces and one poem coming close together looked as though the poem was by John Berryman and the prose pieces both by Elizabeth Bishop. I should have checked when I got the book, but had forgotten about the confusion and did not think to do so. Again, I am so sorry.
