Orson Welles: The Great Disruptor

To celebrate the centenary of Orson Welles’s birth, the British Film Institute is mounting a two-month season in honor of the man they’re calling “the great disruptor.” Amongst the rarities and special events, the greatest excitements for me are different experiments in technique and studio politics: the rerelease of Touch of Evil, in Walter Murch’s irrefutable re-edit, based on Welles’s memo to Universal; and The Magnificent Ambersons, his mutilated masterpiece of voiceover.
