A reading from The Little Book of Terror

I was struck by the artwork in The Little Book of Terror, a collection of paintings and essays by the artist Daisy Rockwell. The paintings, widely exhibited across the US this year, are powerful and bold artistic responses to the previous decade of relentless war, propaganda, and fear. Bathed in pinks, emeralds and violets, and captured in offguardedly intimate and domestic moments, the men and women portrayed here—from Lynndie England to Faisal Shahzad—remind us how much the first drafts of history, invariably hastily composed and partisan, require the subtleties and enigmas of art. Rockwell will read from her book on September 18 at Rice University.
