Mark Whitaker on ‘Smoketown’
At the National Arts Club, Mark Whitaker will be speaking about his new book, Smoketown: The Untold Story of the Other Great Black Renaissance, a history of the flowering of African-American journalism, sports, and culture that transformed Pittsburgh between the 1920s and the 1950s. During those years the city was home to August Wilson and Romare Bearden; the nation’s widest-read black newspaper; two renowned Negro League baseball teams; and a number of jazz legends. This event will be free and open to the public, and will be followed by a book signing.
