UCLA Festival of Preservation
Heavy on Hollywood oddities this year, this festival of newly restored films opens with Anthony Mann’s Korean combat film Men in War (1957), and includes several Laurel and Hardy shorts; a number of obscure films noir; two Haitian-set horror films, the Bela Lugosi vehicle White Zombie (1932) and Ouanga (1935), with Hollywood’s great tragic mulatta Fredi Washington; a few independents, Stanton Kaye’s Brandy in the Wilderness (1969) and Julie Dash’s Illusions (1982); plus two programs of Hearst Metrotone newsreels, one dedicated to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the other celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Sam Fuller’s Dead Pigeon on Beethoven Street (1977), thriller made for German television, is historic as the UCLA Archive’s first all-digital restoration.
