Seeing Charles Newell’s production of Proof is one of the most remarkable evenings in the theater you will ever have. It is a fine take on a play, about Catherine, the daughter of a recently deceased Professor of Mathematics at The University of Chicago and her struggles with mathematical genius and mental illness, that has already won a Pulitzer Prize for its author, David Auburn. Auburn studied at The University of Chicago and knew the sub-culture of mathematicians there. But the setting is not the typical back porch of a Chicago town house, one that was often reproduced in earlier productions. Newell and his remarkable actors have preferred to allow the play to have its own voice by being less specific about its physical placement, although in a sense he is bringing it back to the University that originally fostered it. Chaon Cross is outstanding as Catherine.
