After-Shocks of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake
The emergency response to the earthquake that hit Sichuan on May 12, 2008, killing 69,000 people and leaving another 18,000 missing, revealed a remarkable new degree of voluntary citizen action. In the decade since, the Chinese Communist Party has carefully quashed all such manifestation of independent popular initiative.

That ‘Sweet Abbottabad Air’
Abbottabad was, from its founding, an important military cantonment where the British stationed part of their Nepalese Ghurka force. Like other Indian hill towns such as Darjeeling, it acquired a British flavor which it still had when I visited it in the fall of 1969.
