In November, He Jiankui proclaimed, “It is up to society to decide what to do next,” viewing his claim to have produced two gene-edited human babies as an inflection point that would force scientists, governments, and the public to stop, consult, and, by some collective assent, chart a new course. The disturbing thing is that this reckoning hasn’t happened.
