In response to:

Conjuring with Islam from the May 27, 1982 issue

To the Editors:

In what purports to be a review of my book, Islam in the Modern World and Other Studies [NYR, May 27], Mr. Clifford Geertz not only clearly implies that I am lacking in “tact, openness, tolerance,” but also boldly asserts that I am “reckless to persuade.” These are grave accusations for which, however, your contributor adduces no evidence. If he cannot substantiate his allegations, perhaps he will have the grace to take them back.
