Howard W. French is an associate professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and an occasional columnist for The International Herald Tribune. He spent many years as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, covering Africa, East Asia, and the Americas. He is completing a novel about Africa. His most recent book is A Continent for the Taking: The Tragedy and Hope of Africa. (September 2009)
