In response to:

Cops from the November 5, 1970 issue

To the Editors:

In the November 5 issue of the NYR, in the spirit of those historians who excite themselves over the secret archives of the Vatican, I wrote at length about William A. Westley’s study of police attitudes as a document so long suppressed that it could be found only in the library of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I now discover that it was on the way to the bookstores, having lately been published with a new Preface as Violence and the Police by William A. Westley, MIT, $8.95. Embarrassed as I am not to have known this, I am still more glad to have Westley available at last in a form more adequate than my own meager exposition could have been.
