Julian Bell wishes to make plain that the material on the critical history of Frans Hals and the quotations from Théophile Thoré, on which he drew in his article on Dutch painting [“The Golden Age at Its Best,” NYR, October 11], should have been credited to the researches of Frances Suzman Jowell.
The author of Hogarth, France and British Art: The Rise of the Arts in Eighteenth-Century Britain, distributed in the US by the University of Washington Press and reviewed by Sanford Schwartz in the June 28 issue, is Robin Simon.
